The best DJ advice has nothing to do with DJing

JAMES HYPE
The biggest DJs in the world don't get booked for their DJ skills. They get booked for the music they've made.

A guy came up to me in the gym last week. Told me he just got his first DJ controller, he was learning to DJ, and asked what was one bit of advice I wished I'd had when I first started out.

I thought about it. The best answer I could actually give has nothing to do with DJing. It's: make music.

The biggest DJs in the world don't get booked for their DJ skills. They get booked for the music they've made. Everyone in the world listens to music, even if they've never heard of any DJs.

Martin Garrix made Animals when he was about 15 years old, and it literally set out the course for the rest of his life at the top of the game.

DJing is easy once you've figured out how to mix records — it's just about what you like. But when you learn to make music, that's a learning journey you're going to be on for your entire life.
