It's always hard. It's always a struggle. You're trying to do something everyone wants to do.
When I was 18, I used to go out to clubs in Liverpool and I'd hear the tunes the DJs were playing. They always had songs I wanted to get hold of but couldn't — maybe they weren't released yet, or they were exclusive things.
Then I got my first gig in a proper nightclub. I thought from that point it would be really easy. People would send me music, I'd get promos, I'd have all the cool records I wanted. But I quickly found out that wasn't the case. You only got that music through relationships with people.
I tell that story because it's the perfect example. I always think I'm going to hit that next level and then everything's going to be really easy. Make one song people like, and then everything you do works. Play that show, and after that point it's really easy.
It's never the case. I always fall into the trap of thinking it. Then I always end up coming back and reminding myself: oh shit, you're just doing that thing again. It's not easy. It's always hard. It's always a struggle. You're trying to do something incredible. Something everyone wants to do.
So you've just got to get comfortable with the struggle and embrace it.
The struggle is the fun.
