The one story I never tell

JAMES HYPE
He was a normal guy. And it hit me like a ton of bricks. If he could do it, why couldn't I?

There's one story I never tell. I don't know why I've kept it to myself for this long, but I think someone needs to hear this today.

When I was 20 I was DJing in local clubs. And I thought I was living the dream. I got a fake ID at 16 and I'd been going to clubs ever since. Totally fell in love with nightclubs. So getting paid to be there was unbelievable.

Then one day my mum texted me about a competition for DJs. The winner got a set in Ibiza. I thought it sounded a bit cheesy, but I entered anyway. Somehow I got into the final. And in the final I got to meet Calvin Harris.

I loved Calvin Harris. I'd seen him play before, I loved his music, and I was nervous. Really nervous. This guy was a mythical character to me. Made amazing music, travelled the world, did things I couldn't even imagine.

Then I met him and he was a normal guy. And it hit me like a ton of bricks. He grew up somewhere probably similar to where I did. He had opportunities similar to mine. He'd just figured it out. And somehow that made everything click for me. If he could do it, why couldn't I?

I didn't win the competition. But what I got was worth so much more. Because from that day, I wasn't satisfied with DJing the local club anymore. Something shifted inside me. I knew what was possible. I knew the potential I had. And that's what I've been working towards ever since.

I'm telling you this because I want you to get that same feeling right now, listening to me. I don't have special skills. I promise you that. I'm not different to you.

Just go for it and never stop.
