What music meant to me growing up

JAMES HYPE
I'd take the cassette to school and play the music I'd found for everyone. No one was anywhere near as excited as I was.

Music for me when I was growing up — it was my thing. The thing I discovered. I was an internet kid. Grew up locked away with the computer.

We still had dial-up internet, so if my mum was on the phone, you couldn't use the internet. But when she got off the phone, I'd be on there trying to download music. I'd go deep diving for tunes in every single genre. Found myself obsessed with all these weird and wonderful things that, as far as I knew, no one else around me was listening to.

I had this tape cassette player — my dad's old thing. I used to record music from the computer onto a tape cassette, then take the cassette to school. This is when I was about 12 or 13.

I'd play the music I'd found for everyone. Not on headphones — this thing had a speaker on it. I'd make a tape cassette of all the music I'd found that was super sick.

And no one was anywhere near as excited as I was.
